Author Spotlight, Gloria Doty!

Different enough

Tell me a little bit about you!

Well, I am a divorced (after 40 years of marriage) mother of 5, grandmother of 13 and gr-grandmother of 7. I have had 17 occupations (some ran concurrently LOL) before deciding in June of 2011 to be a full-time writer.

Where are you at in your career?

As for my career, I think I am still in the beginning stages. I wrote my first story in 3rd grade. I was first published in 1979; life took over and although I wrote curriculum and other things for my various jobs, I wasn’t ‘officially’ published until I started submitting to magazines in 2011. I have one non-fiction book published, I have been published in various magazines and I have at least 5 projects I am working on, so I think my career is still moving forward.

What do you write and why?

I write non-fiction, mostly, although I did enter a flash-fiction international contest and won first place in my genre. Surprised me.

My book is “Not Different Enough” and is the story of my daughter and our 30-year journey with autism, Asperger’s and intellectual disabilities. I wrote that for 2 reasons: to offer help and hope to other families and to be rich and famous LOL that second part isn’t working so well yet. I write the freelance magazine articles to share knowledge and to pay the bills.

What are you working on right now?

Right now, I am putting the finishing touches on a book of flower devotions. There are 50 common flower photos each with a corresponding devotion and I am working on a 13-book series for children 7-9 years old. Each book is based on an experience one of my grandchildren had and also has a biblical message included. I am also compiling a cookbook filled with old recipes and the stories of the cooks who used those recipes AND a humorous book detailing those 17 occupations I talked about. I have lots of stories to include….such as exporting goats to Taiwan and having to communicate with the Minister of Agriculture who did not speak English.

What compels you to write?

I am compelled to write because I believe I have been given a gift of truth and humor and a love of words and a love of people. If you combine all of that I don’t have a choice but to write and speak (I do have speaking engagements also)

 What is your writing process?

I’m not sure I have a process. I get an idea, I make notes and outlines, which are subject to change, of course, and I start putting things or chapters together.

Who are you favorite authors?

I wish I could tell you I had favorite authors but I am quite fickle. I read a book, like it, perhaps read a few more by the same author and then switch to someone else. I don’t read porn, gore or grisly content. If I want an overdose of those, I can watch TV. I like a good mystery, love story, westerns, humor, Christian fiction. I hope this is enough info. Thank you so much.
