Family Author Spotlight!

Something special this week. A family spotlight. Karen Clayton and her sons!Karen and son book sons

Tell me a little bit about you!

I was a former HS English teacher & elementary French teacher. Currently, I am a stay-at-home-mom. 2 of my 3 kids write with me. My 14 year old son started when he was 10 & now I have my current 10 year-old writing too. Mitchell (14) is into long boarding, football, guitar, theatre, & singing. Ryan (10) enjoys gymnastics, swim team, soccer, baseball, & longboarding. All three of us have our brown belts in Tae Kwon Do and enjoy hiking.

Where are you at in your career?

I am still in the early stages of my writing career. My oldest son, Mitchell, and I self published our first novel, Mason Davis and the Rise of the Storm Makers, last summer.

What do you write and why?

I write fiction and mostly, YA or MG because I am young at heart. I also write UF MG because that is what my two sons enjoy writing and currently that is what I am working on.

What are you working on right now?

My computer died last fall and I only had 2 out of 4 of my novels backed up. I couldn’t decide, and still haven’t, if I wanted to cough up thousands of dollars to try and retrieve the info. or just rewrite the stories. Mitchell and I spent a lot of time working on this Mason Davis series, so I will do something not sure what. In the meantime, I started a spin-off series with Ryan. We have completed 2 MGs. I just had beta readers give them a read & am looking for more readers. Then I will revise.

What compels you to write?

I have always wanted to write. I made up stories from the time I was little and all the way through college. Then in 2010 after a two week long road trip with my family to various National Parks, my son Mitchell and I came up with the idea for an urban fantasy along the lines of Percy Jackson. We modeled our characters after friends, family, and Disney channel characters. We had so much fun working together that we set out to write 3 more novels. Now, my ten year old wants to write too and so we have.

What is your writing process?

My writing process changes with each story. Sometimes I follow an outline, sometimes I let the story lead me. With the Mason Davis series and spin off series, I start by researching various National Parks. If I can swing it, I will visit the places first with my family. Then my sons and I take each park and make that a chapter. I start by creating the setting & often times telling my kids what characters we need – then my kids will create the action. Having taken Tae Kwon Do has really helped them with the battle scenes. We work together again to create the plot and driving forces. It is really fun working with the boys. They both struggle with writing, but through this process have really grown and even enjoy writing now. My oldest has even started writing his own YA thriller. Who knows what will happen with the 10 yo, but if I can spark at least a little interest, then I think I have done my job. Thus, I may have many reasons why I write, but currently I have 3 reasons I write – my kids and if I can turn them onto reading & writing, then it is all worth it.
