Starting a bi-weekly Author Spotlight. First post is on my fellow author – Brandi Montenegro.
Tell me a little bit about you!
Above all else, I am mom to four kids. I live in Northern Nevada, take college courses online and write.
Where are you at in your career?
I am working on finishing up a few of my novels, polishing them up and will, hopefully, be on the search for an agent by the end of the year.
What do you write and why?
I write dark contemporary young adult fiction. I feel a deeper connection with those in their teen years and the issues they have to deal with. I like to get inside people’s heads and the way teens see the world is most fascinating to me.
What are you working on right now?
I am currently finishing up a YA novel called DISEASED. It deals heavily with death and suicide, and the power that love has over the decisions we make.
What compels you to write?
My characters! They are always in my head, always telling me stories that need to be written down. It’s an uncontrollable urge to write it all, to tell all of these stories. I want just one person to be moved in a way that changes their life.
What is your writing process?
Ideas tend to come to me out of nowhere and at the most inconvenient times. I start with a vague idea and a vague image of a main character or two. I guess my books are more character driven the plot driven. I spend a lot of time with them and have been known to see their faces in real life situations. Other than that, I’m a pantser. I know the direction I want/need the story to go, but I let it happen as it’s being written. I let the pieces fall together on their own
Who are you favorite authors?
Although I read just about anything I can get my hands on, Jonathan Kellerman, Sarah Dessen, Ellen Hopkins and most recently Colleen Hoover are among my favorites.
